Adamstown: Antiques Capital USA
Adamstown, a quaint community in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, is considered by many to be the Antiques Capital of the United States. How did this small village surrounded by farmland earn this national reputation? Well, in one 7-mile stretch of Route 272 in northern Lancaster County between Lancaster and Reading, there are dozens of antiques shops and markets that together host an estimated 5,000 antiques dealers. The sheer volume of antiques and collectibles in one area means there are a lot of hidden treasures to be discovered.
The Adamstown Antiques Mile, as it's often called, is a year-round draw for shoppers and collectors from all over the country. Its beginnings can be traced back to the early 1960s when antiques dealer Charles Weik starting holding flea markets and festivals in Shupp's Grove. Today, you’ll find large complexes that host hundreds of antique dealers each, plus more than a dozen other antique markets, co-ops and shops. Some are indoors, some are outdoors, some are open only on weekends, and some are open year-round. Seasoned antiques hunters know that more shops means the more likely you'll unearth an exciting treasure. You never know what you’re going to find, and that's what makes antiquing an adventure!
With so many antiques markets and dealers, it can be daunting to know where to start. Great places range all the way from Renninger’s Antique Market, with more than 500 dealers, to small flea markets and antique showcases. One of the larger antique malls in Adamstown, Mad Hatter Antiques, boasts more than 100 vendors spread out over 15,000 square feet. You'll find an extensive list on the Antiques Capital USA website. Three times a year, most of the shops, malls and markets celebrate Antique Extravaganza. During these multi-day events in April, June and September, you will find even more dealers, extended shop hours and tons of bargains.
