Discover Lancaster City's Art Galleries and Studios
Art is at the heart of Lancaster's downtown experience. From public art installations that include colorful murals and large-scale sculptures to art galleries, studios and museums, art aficionados and those new to art appreciation will find plenty of visually inspiring talent on display throughout the city.
During your wintertime stay at After Eight Bed and Breakfast, take advantage of these quieter months to explore Lancaster's art scene. The city is home to many art galleries and artist studios, a concentration of which you'll find along Prince Street (also referred to as Gallery Row) and in the immediate vicinity. As you stroll along our snowy sidewalks, pop inside to warm your soul with fine art in every medium, as well as finely crafted goods from a mix of local and national artists.
Lancaster City Arts works to promote Lancaster's creative culture. A great place to start is the Freiman Stoltzfus Gallery. A Lancaster native, Stoltzfus is proficient in a variety of media and is inspired by music, nature's four seasons, architecture, Amish quilts and more. Next, head to Red Raven Art Company, just a few doors away. Here you'll find original works of both local and regional artists showcasing a diverse array of artistic styles, as well as more than 500 fine art prints.
After exploring Gallery Row on Prince Street, head to Art & Glassworks on Queen Street, which specializes in handmade flat glass pieces and carries an assortment of other items including fine American pottery, stained glass panels, paperweights, jewelry, tiles and more. Scroll through the Lancaster City Arts list of member galleries for additional galleries to peruse, and be sure to attend the Lancaster ArtWalk, held each spring and fall, for special exhibitions, meet-the-artist events and live demonstrations.
We'd be remiss if we didn't encourage you to reserve some time for a stop at the Lancaster Museum of Art while you're visiting. Located in the Grubb Mansion, it's a community-based museum that fosters close relationships with the local visual arts community and works to enhance the quality of life in Lancaster through art. You'll find ever-changing exhibitions of regional, national and international artists spread throughout this grand 4,000-square-foot venue. The works of art on display here are as diverse as the people and communities served by the museum.
"The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance." — Aristotle
