Dutch Haven and America’s Best Shoo-Fly Pie
It may have contested origins, but one thing’s for sure: it’s delicious no matter what. And while the recipe is assuredly Pennsylvanian (or Pennsylvania Dutch), different theories have surfaced to explain it’s interesting signature name, shoo-fly pie. For us, shoo-fly pie is a staple dessert. The Amish and Mennonites in Lancaster County have been making this tasty treat out of dark molasses, brown sugar, and buttery crumbles for generations!
Since the mid-1940s, the windmill of Dutch Haven Pie Bakery and Gift Shop has been a famous landmark on Route 30 marking the beginning of true Amish country. Nicknamed Lancaster’s first tourist attraction, it’s also where you can find America’s Best Shoo-Fly Pie as noted by Time magazine. The store still uses the same original recipe for the tasty dessert.
Other than the delicious pie, Dutch Haven sells distinctive local furniture, jams and jellies, hundreds of recipe books, and a broad selection of souvenirs and gifts to take home. It’s actually the largest Amish souvenir store in the entire county so if you’d like to bring home a memento of your visit or find a gift for loved ones or friends, Dutch Haven is the perfect location. Shop Amish hats and bonnets, country t-shirts, dolls, Hex signs, mugs, magnets, and more.
Shop Adirondack chairs, dressers, cabinets, bookcases, and Amish-made cedar chests at the Amish Stuff Etc. Store as well as drying racks, framed art, candles, hats, wind chimes and more. Different colors, different styles, and great bargains make this your next stop on your Lancaster County adventure.
