Explore the Enchantment of the National Christmas Center
The holiday season brings with it a sense of magic and wonder, and what better place to experience it than the National Christmas Center. In the heart of Lancaster County, this enchanting seasonal destination is a celebration of all things Christmas and offers visitors a glimpse into the rich history and traditions that make the holidays so special. Relive the magic of Christmas with a visit to the National Christmas Center when you stay with us at After Eight Bed and Breakfast this holiday season.
For nearly 20 years, the National Christmas Center was located in Paradise, Pennsylvania, just 5 minutes from our historic bed-and-breakfast. In January 2018, the tourist attraction closed its doors, but the search was on for someone who would purchase the Christmas collections and keep the center's spirit alive. Enter Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown. The event venue purchased the entire collection, much of which is now on display as part of the Star Barn Village.
Today, there are 18,000 square feet of treasures from Christmas past to explore at the National Christmas Center. As you step through its doors, you'll encounter life-sized indoor exhibits depict the storefronts in Columbia, Pennsylvania, as they were in the 1950s. Cheerful exhibits capture the magic of Christmas traditions and history, including some of the best examples of Christmas antiques and collectibles, Santas from around the world, 5,000 hand-painted toy soldiers, and some of the finest dolls and dollhouses anywhere. The collection is so extensive, you'll want to give yourself plenty of time to explore the whole facility.
One of the highlights of the National Christmas Center is the "Santa's North Pole" exhibit, where visitors can explore a lifelike recreation of Santa's workshop. The attention to detail is nothing short of magical, with elves bustling about, crafting toys and wrapping presents. It's a journey into the heart of the North Pole, and both children and adults alike can't help but be captivated by the festive atmosphere.
For those who appreciate the artistry of Christmas decorations, the center's "Christmas Around the World" exhibit is a visual feast. It showcases diverse holiday traditions from different cultures and countries, featuring an array of ornaments, lights and festive displays. It's a beautiful reminder that while Christmas may be celebrated in different ways, the universal joy and spirit of giving unite people around the globe.
Plans are underway for a larger home for the National Christmas Center on the grounds of Stone Gables Estate. Eventually, it will move to its permanent spot at the yet-to-be-built Barns of Belmont, a 40,000-square-foot restored barn that is in the midst of a preservation and restoration project.
The National Christmas Center appeals to the child in us all. It's only open on select dates in late November and December each year, so don't miss your limited opportunity to visit when you stay with us at After Eight Bed and Breakfast. It's truly a festive journey back in time that will warm your heart and ignite the Christmas spirit within you.
