Get Your Scare on in Haunted Lancaster
A man struck by a train long ago, a spinster sister banned from the family mansion, convicted criminals hanged after being found guilty at trial, and a silent movie star. These are just a few of the spirits reported to haunt historical locations and buildings throughout Lancaster County. You can get more information about these and other nearby haunted sites online at the Most Haunted Places in Lancaster. Some are private and closed to visitors, while others allow you to "self-explore" or visit as part of an organized tour.
In the spirit of Halloween, treat (no tricks!) yourself to one of the Haunted Lancaster tours this month. In downtown Lancaster city, you can explore the long-forgotten mysteries of this 300-year-old city and hear haunting tales of otherworldly vigils, fatal curses, and star-crossed lovers. Nearby Strasburg also offers a haunted candlelight walking tour, during which you'll listen to stories of haunted mansions, eerie graveyards, and spirits that roam the night! An adult must accompany children under 18.
For those looking for a more substantial scare and who can muster up their courage, Field of Screams in Mountville (18 miles east of our After Eight Bed & Breakfast) delivers four spine-tingling experiences:
1. Haunted Hayride – Tractor-pulled wagons take brave riders on a horrifying hayride into the depths of a dark and sinister cornfield.
2. Den of Darkness Horror Barn – Three stories of terror await in the passageways and mazes of a 200-year-old original barn.
3. Frightmare Asylum – Disturbed and nightmarish doctors and nurses welcome you to this facility for the demented and deranged.
4. Nocturnal Wasteland – Winding paths through dense overgrown vegetation in foreboding and desolate woods.
Although children are permitted, Field of Screams does not recommend its attractions for those younger than 10. With more than 40 kid-friendly games and activities for your little ones, Corn Cob Acres is a non-scary daytime alternative.
For those who can't get enough scare and terror-inducing thrills, Jason Woods offers five "haunted and horror" attractions, including a hayride and an outdoor walking experience. Located approximately 30 minutes by car from Gordonville, Jason's Woods is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in October. Most attractions are outdoors on a working farm, so dress accordingly. Parental discretion is advised for young children.
