Threshermen's Reunion: A Steam and Gas Engine Extravaganza
You won't find a group more passionate about preserving Lancaster County's rich agricultural and industrial history than the Rough & Tumble Engineers. This historical association and its museum aim to collect, preserve, restore, and exhibit tools and artifacts that commemorate farming traditions and innovations of yesteryear. The Rough & Tumble Engineers hosts a handful of events throughout the year that show off antique agricultural and industrial machinery, the biggest of which is the Thresherman's Reunion.
2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the Threshermen's Reunion, scheduled for August 16-19 at the 33-acre museum grounds in Kinzers, Pennsylvania, just 5 miles down the Lincoln Highway from our historic bed-and-breakfast. It's the most complete operating steam and gas engine show in the East and the second-oldest such show in the U.S. It's a huge event, drawing 30,000 people from all over the country who are treated to the mesmerizing sight of steam and gas engines whirling to life.
From steam-powered tractors to vintage threshers, you'll see an impressive display of craftsmanship and ingenuity of days gone by. The rhythmic chugging of engines and the nostalgic smell of coal and oil create an immersive experience that transports you back in time. The list of exhibits is long and fascinating — steam traction engines, antique tractors, threshing machines, hit-and-miss gas engines, small and large gas engines, antique wagons, stationary balers, and so much more. These iconic relics stand as reminders of the remarkable progress made in the agricultural and industrial sectors.
The Threshermen's Reunion isn't just a passive display of machinery; it's an interactive experience. Live demonstrations showcase the power and efficiency of these historical machines, including a working saw mill and shingle mill. You'll have the opportunity to engage with the exhibits, learning about the mechanics and operation of these vintage marvels. From hands-on activities like operating steam engines to guided tours explaining the inner workings of these historical artifacts, visitors gain a deeper appreciation for the skills and knowledge of the engineers who operated them.
Need more to do at the Threshermen's Reunion? Take a ride on two steam trains that loop the museum grounds. Check out the daily Parade of Power and the Pageant of Threshing. There's also a huge flea market on site with more than 100 vendors, and evening activities include antique and classic tractor pulls and steam games. When it's time to eat, there are plenty of shady spots around the grounds where you can sit and enjoy some of the delicious homemade food available for purchase.
